We’re always talking about the future of design, the future of technology, the future of MAKING. In a world where we can interact with empty space, a world where we can 3D print our own shower curtain rings and bionic ears, a world where we’ll be sending people to space for vacation, how do we find the next ‘big thing’? Maker Galaxy is a show that explores the crossroads of Design, Technology, and the Future of Making.

This week our special guest comes from SolidWorks as the Director of Education, Marie Planchard. Marie is responsible for the entire education leg of the popular CAD package where she works on an international level driving STEM education efforts from ages as early as eight all the way through the college level. We’ll talk with Marie about some of the cool projects she’s seen students doing internationally, how SolidWorks is helping drive innovation at the high-school level for the FIRST International Robotics competition, and how SolidWorks is helping drive the STEM bubble worldwide.

We’ll be discussing:

  • What does the ‘Director of Education’ at SolidWorks do?
  • How does art fit into STEM (STEAM)?
  • SolidWorks as an art medium?
  • Additive Manufacturing in STEM…a double-edged sword?
  • SolidWorks and the FIRST International Robotics Competition
  • The near future of STEM education
  • …and more!

On our next episode we’ll be talking to the CEO and founder of UK-based Makie Lab, Alice Taylor. Makie Lab is ‘the entertainment play space for young people’ that invites users to download and print 3D toys and accessories. We’ll talk with Alice about how she started Makie Lab, how printing toys on demand works, and where she thinks the near future of additive manufacturing is heading.
