Siemens Slams SolidSmack with Questions. This is What I Said.

23 Aug, 2010 by in NEWS

A couple months ago I went to Siemens PLMConx Event. It was a magical time filled with magical talk about PLM, Solid Edge, NX, curling irons, highlight techniques and ways to deal with split ends… I may be getting two events mixed up, but whatever the case, Mrs. Dora Smith was on the hunt to get a video interview with me.

I cleverly (unknowingly) evaded such an activity by diving behind people larger than myself. I could not, however, avoid questions via email.

So, if you’re interested in the slightest about why I blog, what’s open on my desktop or what really happens at these events, give it a read. You can hammer the Q&A goodness into your oculars at the Siemens PLM Blog. Oh, by the way, Dora asks several questions about Twitter. If you’re interested, you can follow me @solidsmack.

11 May, 2009 by in CULTURE

Are you tired of people going on about Twitter? Well, it’s not going to ends anytime soon with talk about them being bought out and the value their search provides. One outfit, TwitterJobSearch.com, is bringing value to people, even those that don’t use Twitter, by compiling all the data about jobs on Twitter.

What’s even cooler is that they’re looking at context, so it’s not people talking about certain jobs, it’s actual available posted position possibility.

24 Apr, 2009 by in DESIGN

I’m happy to say that Industrial Design is alive and well in the Social Media sphere due in part to a select few Industrial Designer bringing things together to let everyone else know what’s up.

Industrial Designers around the world are getting organized on Twitter. The coolest thing about it? They’re not just using it to connect with other ID’ers, but to brainstorm designs, discuss how to use it and generally inspire the design each other.

If you’re an ID student, Professional or interested in what’s going on with ID, the conversation is going to be happening on Twitter. Here’s where to start.

5 Successful Practices for… EVERYONE IN THE ENTIRE WORLD

26 Mar, 2009 by in CULTURE

Strap an unnecessary amount of shiny metal objects to your clothing and take a swig of intensity. We’re about to step inside the realm of very vague advice… and then totally slam it with the most practical information your fingers have ever bleed scrapping to get a hold of.

Out of all the practices in the world what could be the best, most successful ones? Turns out, it’s 5. exactly 5. not 4 or 6, but 5. Did ya ever think it would only be that many? Here’s what’s going on.

Bradford Waugh wrote a very relevant article over at Product Design Hub today called 5 Successful Practices For New Grads. Good stuff, but it failed to give some details I think you definitely need to know.

Not just for new grads
And get this, it’s not just for new grads. As a matter of fact, it’s probably even more relevant for people getting laid-off, looking for work or preparing themselves to just be dang, freakin’ cool.

So, were gonna take Brad’s 5 practices and shed a little more light on ‘em. Let’s do this.

180+ SolidWorks and 3D CAD Users to Follow on Twitter *Updated*

31 Jul, 2008 by in TECH

Twitter = accessibility. It has opened up clogged lines of communication and expanded personal and community networks around the world and it just keeps getting bigger, I tell ya.

When some of us were on months ago, there’s wasn’t much buzz on the 3D CAD side of things. That has changed big time in the last couple months and there’s suddenly a growing base of users and CAD companies represented.

I’ve gathered them together for ya. This is everyone I know of on Twitter involved with SolidWorks and 3D CAD. If you have more or need a correction, let me know and we’ll keep the list updated.

Update!!!!!!!
This list started with only 40 people in July 2008. Now, there are literally hundreds of SolidWorks and 3D CAD users on Twitter. So, as of April 20th, 2009 this list is being handled directly through Twitter! This makes it much easier for you to follow all the CAD people that have joined! Visit @CADTwitList on Twitter to see all the friends below and more that have joined. See ya on Twitter!!

Why I Like Twitter

06 May, 2008 by in RESOURCES, ROCKIN'

It’s new and shiny and doesn’t hurt, plus…

  • The conversation is happening there
  • You find out stuff before anyone else
  • You have access to people you normally wouldn’t
  • I’ve meet a lot of people and a lot of SolidWorks users
  • I’ve found new CAD related and SolidWorks Blogs (see below)

It’s pretty amazing when you can talk with someone you’ve never meet and suddenly feel like you know them.

I’ve been able to hear about someone as they travel from the US to Israel, here about a photomob develop at Google’s web2.0 booth, see people discussing SolidWork tips, and get invites to closed betas – Pretty cool stuff. You just don’t realize the relationships that can develop out there either. I’m hoping to meet a lot of people I’ve had conversations with since being on.

Additionally, it becoming a resource. I’ve just started tagging all SolidWorks tips I give out and there’s plenty of talk about news that’s happening.

So, if you’re interested, follow me @solidsmack. Say hi, tell me where you’re from and if you like .

Tools that make Twitter more fun
Twhirl – Twitter Client
Tweetscan – real-time twitter search
Twitterholic – Twitters Top 100
HashTags – Tag your Tweets

Blogs I’ve found through Twitter:
Clinging to Ideas – Brian Slick makes the transition from I-DEAS to SolidWorks.
TheSwGeek – Alex Ruiz geeks out bigtime.
Schmalls – Josh Thomson puts the hook on SolidWorks and Programming
Chris Kelly – yeah, he’s Siemens PLM nut :) but also very nice

Some other blogger on there that you may know are Ben Eadie, Brian McElyea, and Lou Gallo

Where are you?
