Paint A Rainbow On Your SolidWorks Assembly. Multi-Colored Macro Follow-up.

19 Aug, 2010 by Josh Mings in CAD
3D Human CAD Models

A mere month ago we asked y’all how to go about slapping color across parts in SolidWorks. Unless you have a program to apply a random color to a part when you put it in an assembly, they all have the same curiously drab color. That’s not the diverse kind of 3D modeling world we want to live in, now is it? We need color.

So, you responded with a lot of great options and Guilherme C. Webster sent in one that not only added color to parts in an assembly, but also added color to multibodies in a part. Rock. and. ROLL.

Very nice Guilherme, and a huge thanks to everyone who contributed to the conversation. If you missed it there’s some great macro hackin’ fun in the comments for randomized color. Here are the results you’ll get with the macro and the macro to download and play with yourself. As you see it even works with virtual parts. Aw yeah.

Full Speed Tree Bleed. SolidWorks Treehouse, Not Just a Treehouse.

27 Oct, 2009 by Josh Mings in NEWS

You may enjoy running at a tree full speed with your mouth wide open, but when it comes to really embedding a detailed assembly tree structure into your forehead… or your project, you may actually find SolidWorks Treehouse to be a little less painful.

Nearly a year ago, we looked at 5 Ways to Use Treehouse to Speed Your Design. We were naive, full of wet noodles and thought it was just a neat little tool to set up assemblies. Turns out it was actually an CAD-app symbiote festering as a larvae waiting to take on full-scale assembly management.

Oh yes, shake your head. But there’s something going on here. Treehouse V2 is available for download and it got a lot more functionality. Let’s take a look at what’s new and then run through the wooded lot of sharpened speculation.

Angry Samurai Combat Tips for Circular Refererence Suckage in SolidWorks

28 Jul, 2009 by Josh Mings in CAD

The model you’re working on and the bad rice you had last night are sucking the will to live right out of your kabuto wearing head.

Circular references are some of the most heinous problems to crop up in assemblies this side of ancient feudal Japan. The two worst things about these type of problems is that they’re not shown as errors and you have to dig them out of the miry clay of SolidWorks features. Two items no amount of Katana swordplay will work against. However, there are ways to slice up assembly issue and destroy Circular References.

Toasty Tip to Mirror a SolidWorks Assembly As a Part

13 Jan, 2009 by Josh Mings in CAD

solidworks-mirror-assySo, how many times are you sitting admiring the sunrise, contemplating the various ways to mirror an assembly in SolidWorks when you suddenly realize that’s not a bagel you stuck in the toaster, but your right thumb.

With files sizes on the mind, you may have a tendancy to avoid mirroring SolidWorks assemblies as much as toasting your appendages. However, there’s a really simple way to mirror assemblies while keeping your drawings looking as brilliant as that sunrise. Here’s how.

SolidWorks Tip: 5 Ways to Use Treehouse to Speed Assembly Design

08 Dec, 2008 by Josh Mings in CAD

I’ve got an idea. Let’s make starting a project really easy. Throw a bid at the screen and watch the assembly build itself.

While that isn’t exactly happening (yet), SolidWorks Labs is stirring the boiling cauldron of 3D CAD efficiency in an attempt to bring that one step closer.

The Treehouse project allows you to build an assembly structure before modeling anything. Can it help? Yes, and here are 5 ways it will.
