How To Show Molting Yaks How to Update Custom SolidWorks Materials

16 Feb, 2010 by Josh Mings in CAD
3D Human CAD Models

Go ask a molting yak this single question, “Are you using SolidWorks materials??!!” If it does anything other than say yes, you have total freedom to boot the fur right off his confused face.

However, if he is using SolidWorks materials, pull a stump up to the waterin’ hole and prepare to show him how to solve a little problem he may be having. A problem where the appearances don’t update when a material is changes. There’s a simple fix and if your flaking yak friend uses templates, he’ll want to update those right away. Here’s how.

15 Feb, 2010 by Josh Mings in NEWS

It’s been nearly two weeks since I fell down a flight of stairs at the Anaheim convention center after some new features for SolidWorks 2011 were previewed at SolidWorks World, but that’s not gonna stop me from spitting up blood to tell you about them.

Last week, we talked possible enhancements, but this is different. These are real features you’ll see in the next version of SolidWorks. Yeah, you haven’t even upgraded to SolidWorks 2010, but come on, SolidWorks 2010… so last decade.

SolidWorks Slams on the Service Pack Brakes for 64 bit 2009 & 2010 *Updated*

19 Jan, 2010 by Josh Mings in NEWS

I’d tell you all to stand up simultaneously and start slapping each other while screaming and going into a frenzied panic, but that would be putting it mildly. What you should do is slap each other, scream, and start pulling the cords violently from the wall socket and flicking the light switches off and on… There, now we’re in proper state of hysteria. Why?

Well, it just so happens that there are issues with the 64-bit versions of SolidWorks 2009 SP5, 2010 SP1 or 2010 SP2 which have subsequently been pulled from the Customer download area… seems a SolidWorks software surgeon left a pair of forceps in the body cavity before closing up Mr. SolidWorks 64bit. Here’s more on the issue.

The Winner of the SpacePilot Pro 3D Spinnin’ Mouse Is…

30 Dec, 2009 by Josh Mings in CONTESTS

Well, well, well, well, well, well, well… ahem… it’s no big surprise that when I asked if I should upgrade to Windows 7 and SolidWorks 2010 or just start vomiting, that 61% of you said to UPGRADE, while 14% said to just start vomiting.

We all know there are reasons to upgrade. We’ll touch on that in the future, in case you’re trying to prove the benefits to someone. Now, to the business at hand. There’s one person that will walk away the glorious 3D maneuvering capabilities of the brand new SpacePilot Pro from 3DConnexion.

The winner of that is…

Wait to Vomit 3D CAD or Move to Windows 7 and SolidWorks 2010? Win a SpacePilot PRO

23 Dec, 2009 by Josh Mings in TECH

If you get the fever and shakes just thinking about moving to new technology, I’m with you. (I’m totally not with you) I’d much prefer to just stick my finger in my throat and vomit magnificent cad data all over a glass office table.

Can you imagine?… you SO know that would be awesome. People would sit… and wait… to watch you wretch. But until they come up with the technology that allows vomiting CAD to happen, we’re stuck with upgrading hardware and software till we’re numb in the face.

So, right now, I’m chugin’ Ovaltine and bangin’ away on Windows 98 and SolidWorks 97 plus. STOP LAUGHING! it hurts… (I’m totally not using those, but…) I need you to make fun of me and tell me why I need to put my fear of change muscular IT people with laser guns, behind me and upgrade to the latest tech.

You know what you could get? Well, besides, virtual high fives for your wit from everyone, you’ll have the chance to win a SpacePilot Pro. It’s a fancy 3D mouse thingy that’s part of the scary, new present of technology. All ya gotta do to enter is leave a comment making fun of me and giving us all good reasons to upgrade to Windows 7 and SolidWorks 2010… or not. If you want a few extra chances then do the following…

10 Things That Still Sucks the Big Lemon in SolidWorks 2010.

31 Aug, 2009 by Josh Mings in CAD

So, last week we looked at a lot of new features in SolidWorks 2010 – the ‘best’ features and how to use some of the more prominent ones. It was, by far, a brief look at what will spill onto your screen come release day.

There were a few mentions of what was lacking in the new release, but now we swing right through the middle, as hard as we can, tearing as few important ligaments as possible. I’ll touch on ten, but no doubt you could add a few more. What would they be?

SolidWorks 2010: There Are MultiBodies Everywhere, and They Have Materials

25 Aug, 2009 by Josh Mings in CAD

So, you have stacks of bodies spilling out your doors, but none of them have materials applied to them huh? Not until now.

In SolidWorks, it use to be that all geometry in a part had to be one body. Then we got the ability to create multiple bodies in a part with only one material. Now, by a stroke of genius, SolidWorks has bequeathed upon you the ability to add multiple materials to multibody parts. We’ll explain how to do it, how it’s different from regular parts and what’s shakin’ out in beta.

Slam a caffeine drink and stick some sparklers in your eyes, we’re about to take a surface-level look at the new features of SolidWorks 2010, complete with cheesy little award graphics and some special SolidSmack commentary.

The 2010 version is still in beta, but that won’t keep us from pouring it half-baked from the beta container to poke at a bit. There are new User Interface (UI) tools, more Multibody mayhem, more for features and fun for drawings, all of which just might bring a more consistent workflow to your 3D world.
