Ask the Reader: Should Drawing Revisions Be Letters or Numbers?

20 Jan, 2011 by Josh Mings in CULTURE
3D Human CAD Models

This week, a deep, thought-provoking poll that really matters. One that paws like a toothless rat against the marshmallowy film of time. Everybody knows drawing revisions are better represented as… what? Letters or numbers? How about letters and numbers? Should we even have a choice? Should 14 year old standards been thrown out with the filing cabinets? This is where it finally gets decided…

Ask The Reader: What Mix of Programs Do You Have in Your Product Design Arsenal? [Poll]

15 Jul, 2010 by Josh Mings in CULTURE

It’s been a while since we’ve asked this. Plus, when I was talking to a friend about mixing cheese sauce with green paint and throwing it into a fan, he suddenly slapped me and mentioned this:

“I’m currently using SolidWorks, NX, AutoCAD, TeamCenter, KeyShot, Shot, and Photoshop as my design arsenal.”

I dropped the cheese sauce. I was shocked and amazed. “That’s a lot of different programs.” I said. I imagine some of you live in the same cornucopia of deisgn and management bliss.

For instance, I use SolidWorks, AutoCAD, a homegrown PDM system, Photoview 360, modo and Photoshop.” Quite the list as well, I must say. So now, I’m wondering about you. How crazy is it?

Ask the reader: Would You Switch CAD Systems for Mobile Options?

15 Jun, 2010 by Josh Mings in CULTURE

There’s no doubt. Computing is changing. But, most of us still sit at our desks punchin’ keys with one hand while staying caffeinated with the other. So, what would happen if you could keep the caffeine and ditch the desk?

The thing is, a lot of us need that workstation wallop to crank huge amounts of 3D data, analysis and renderings. I imagine that’s changing as well and we will start to see more options which, at the very least, make that box warming your feet, quite obsolete. For us users though, we would have to see the value in switching.

So, if an existing CAD company (or a new one) created lightweight faster apps that allow you to extend the use of your data via laptop, netbook, or mobile, would you switch?

Ask the Reader: What topics about 3D and Design interest you the most?

18 Mar, 2010 by Josh Mings in CULTURE

Well now, I hear some of you are in the mood for a really broad question with a very broad and generalized set of choices. EXCELLENT, I say! We’ve got just the question.

Today, we’re wondering what topics about 3D, design and any combination of the two, interest you the most. Why? Because there’s an anxious group of senior citizens waiting to take the results and make craft and quilt blocks from them! How fun is that!? In addition, we’re prepping to connect more content, but it totally depends on your choices, so…

Did I miss something?? Let me know and I’ll add it! THE MORE, THE BETTER. So, wheel grams over to the computer and help her make a choice!

Ask The Reader: How Old is Your Hardware? {Poll}

20 Jan, 2010 by Josh Mings in CULTURE

My good friend, Jeff Mirisola, got a little riled up and started beating foam bats into the skull of asinine expectations with a recent post. He talks about an engineer who couldn’t use SolidWorks… because his computer was 10 years old.

That is way old. I’d put it out to pasture and let it die in peace. But it makes me wonder, 10 years ago a workstation was a pretty hefty expense. Maybe there are more people hanging onto their beloved rigs than we think.

So, what about you? Are you hanging on to aging technology, staying with the latest of sitting somewhere in between?

Ask The Reader: Are You Upgrading to Windows 7? {Poll}

28 Oct, 2009 by Josh Mings in CULTURE

Well, well, well, from the looks of the last poll, not too many people care about hardware/software upgrade plans. I agree… BORING. For me, a hardware upgrade consists of bottling pure rage (and my new hot sauce recipe) to throw a computer 200 feet into the air.

So, while we’re on the topic of rage, lets do a really cliché poll about Microsoft’s hot new OS, Windows 7, that was made available last week. Maybe this one will get some more interests since Windows is sooooo much better than Mac, and Macs are soooooo much better than Windows.

Yes, completely contradictory statements and why you love SolidSmack a little more that a hard slap across the ear after gagging on a bean.

Ask the Reader: If You Could Design Anything With 3D What Would It Be? {Poll}

02 Sep, 2009 by Josh Mings in NEWS

OK, so the last poll revealed that no one cares if the OS goes away as long as our lovely apps work. Hoorah. But who cares about OS this or OS that when you can model up something sweet you’ve always wanted to, right?

There’s the 3D modeling at your day job, but what if you had your choice? I somehow doubt most would honestly choose gasket molds. Not that gasket molds don’t ‘pay the bills,’ but what would be the ideal? I’d be throwing down some models of spacecraft, robots and toys myself. What would you model?

Ask the Reader: How Do You Model? Plus A Top-Down Modeling Challenge

12 Aug, 2008 by Josh Mings in CAD

top-down modeling in SolidWorksI know. You’re just screaming, “I work with the CAMERA. Striking a pose this way and that.” *whoosh, whoosh*

I’m actually talking about how you model your 3D design in SolidWorks. Ah, now this post is suddenly boring. No tips to get that gritty engineer look on film, just stuff about drawing lines and extruding stuff.

But look here, a question for ya and a challenge for your top-down design idea to be featured on SolidSmack.

Ask the Reader: What Version of SolidWorks Are You Using? (Oh, and Tips.)

02 Jul, 2008 by Josh Mings in CAD

Right now, I currently have 3 versions of SolidWorks installed on my computer – 2007, 2008, and 2009Beta. oh, and 2005 till just recently. It’s crazy I tell ya. I use 2008 mostly right now, but have to switch back to 2007 for some models. It made me wonder what everyone out there is actually using.

I imagine 3 installations is the exception. Most probably wouldn’t want to attempt this. It works fine for me and makes it easy to do comparisons between versions. What about you?

What are your reasons for not upgrading?
