Ask The Reader: What Would You Use Your Kung-Fu CAD Skills to Totally Redesign? {Poll}

13 Jan, 2010 by in CULTURE

If you’re anything like me you have a blast furnace on standby, ready to toss a shoddy product design into the very instant it frustrates you.

Fortunately, you have great skills… great Kung-fu CAD skills that, harnessed under the proper kind of energy-efficient lighting with sufficient doses of caffeine, would rival the power of a million suns… or a design intern with bad head cold. There are a LOT of things that could use a good redesign, but what would you choose out of this list? or… What would you add?

Ask the Reader: When Did You Start Modeling in 3D? {Poll}

09 Dec, 2009 by in DESIGN

Well, the last poll showed people overwhelmingly think our robots servants should keep management quarantined. For good reason, no doubt. We all want to frolic in the freedom of designing and rendering awesome bits of plastic and metal in our favorite 3D program.

There’s probably a time in your life that you remember 2D being torn like a shroud from your innocent mind. All of a sudden you had to deal with multiple files, multiple file formats and the expectation that everything you make will look cooler, work better and save everybody loads of time.

It happened just like that too, didn’t it? So, when did it happen for you?

Ask The Reader: After Robot Apocalyspe, What Design Task Should Our New Robot Slaves Do? {Poll}

18 Nov, 2009 by in CULTURE

Of course it’s a valid question! We just can’t ignore that after mankind’s self-imposed moment of singularity, we’ll all basically be fleshy corpuscles in the eyes of of our sentient, mechanized masters. That is until we realize that robots hate anything made of peanut butter. You know it’ll happen.

So, ok, most of you may think that the robots will wipe us out. Here at SolidSmack, we’re naively optimistic, so we’ve just got to know what you think will be delegated to robots… for planning purposes. You just can’t be too prepared.

Ask The Reader: Tablet, Laptop, Desktop. What Would You Use For 3D Design?

23 Sep, 2009 by in TECH

Technology is changing and growing faster than your mangy hair. And like the hair, it’s time to think about a little trim and a wee bit o’ style.

Not so long ago, many ‘CAD technicians’ used a tablet menu to pick and click their way to 2-dimensional, layer switchin’ bliss. We’ve seen a transition, moving away from menu tablets to on-screen menus, on through marking menus and mouse gestures, and then back picking commands via touch-screen. Product development is heading for a change as are the devices we use. So, in the future…

Ask the Reader: How In the Blazes is the ‘YellowClip’ Manufactured? Plus New Photos.

15 Sep, 2009 by in DESIGN

How many times do you see a product design and think, “How could this possibly be manufactured at a reasonable cost?”

The ‘YellowClip’ Clothesline Clip designed by Paul Sandip is just one of those designs that brings up such questions. It’s curvy, it doesn’t rust, it’s available in a variety of colors and it looks like a tooling nightmare. Is it? How in the blazes do you think this simple design could be manufactured?

Reader Poll: What Do You Like (Dislike) About SolidSmack?

10 Jun, 2008 by in NEWS

SolidSmack has been around for just over a year and I’m lovin’ every bit of every juicy 3D/Tech/Design/SolidWorks Tip post I put up, but last night in the wee hours of a foggy night I wondered, “What the heck do all the wonderful people that visit SolidSmack like (not like) about the site?”

So, the fate of SolidSmack lies in the click of your mouse button, any comments you want to add, and my ability to totally ignore anything bad you say about me or the site.

I hope you have fun and I hope you provide some really detailed ideas or offer me money to stop blogging and finish my home renovation. Oh, I’ll still be your friend even if you say something mean. :)
