SolidWorks Slams on the Service Pack Brakes for 64 bit 2009 & 2010 *Updated*

19 Jan, 2010 by in NEWS

I’d tell you all to stand up simultaneously and start slapping each other while screaming and going into a frenzied panic, but that would be putting it mildly. What you should do is slap each other, scream, and start pulling the cords violently from the wall socket and flicking the light switches off and on… There, now we’re in proper state of hysteria. Why?

Well, it just so happens that there are issues with the 64-bit versions of SolidWorks 2009 SP5, 2010 SP1 or 2010 SP2 which have subsequently been pulled from the Customer download area… seems a SolidWorks software surgeon left a pair of forceps in the body cavity before closing up Mr. SolidWorks 64bit. Here’s more on the issue.

SolidWorks Dumping XP and PhotoWorks, Big Hugs For PhotoView 360 and Window 7

11 Aug, 2009 by in NEWS

Hold your gasps for a few minutes… ok, just a bit more, hold it… and release. I know, it’s almost shocking. And your friends? They probably won’t believe you for a few minutes, but yes, it’s true. SolidWorks is dropping support for Windows XP and phasing out PhotoWorks after 2010.

Thanks to Matt Lombard for scraping off the boon of speculation by posting excerpts on the future of product support from a recent SolidWorks Partner Program email. Head over to read the news. Here are some of the highlights.

SolidWorks Flickr Finds: The Rockin’est Visual Essay You May Ever See

26 Mar, 2009 by in ROCKIN'

Look, I know you’ve seen your share of provocative ‘visual essays’ that just make your wits reel with multi-dimensional perceptions of life and the universe, but this one is really cool looking, and it smells of PhotoWorks rendering.

This lil’ experiment in visual prose is from Darren Ng. You may remember his impressive apartment refurb done in SolidWorks. Try to guess how he did this. Maybe he’ll be nice and let us know.

What’s really interesting is how similar this task is to what we as designers and engineers have to do each day.

Here are the details…

Create Stylish SolidWorks Graphics without PhotoWorks

09 Jul, 2008 by in CAD

I had a conversation with someone yesterday about how to create really great looking images without using the SolidWorks rendering add-in, PhotoWorks. I told him it was simple and you can do it in just a few steps. ‘No way, show me.’, he said.

If you have PhotoWorks, great; you can create some very slick graphics. However, if you don’t have PhotoWorks or the time to learn and create those fancy images using rendering programs like Blender and Hypershot (which I would recommend), this is for you.

A few extras
You can do all your work in SolidWorks and get an product image good enough for any portfolio, website, magazine or brochure and there are just a few steps to make it happen. On top of that, if you have Adobe Photoshop, there’s a quick trick you can do to make it look extra good. I’ll go into that at the end.

Zombie Killin’ Carts and Call for PhotoWorks Tips

07 Jul, 2008 by in CAD, CONTESTS

Recently, SolidWorks thwarted a would-be Zombie attack by launching the SolidWorks Geniuses marketing campaign. First up was the Leonardo Da Vince Self-Powered (Zombie-eliminating) Cart. You saw it, I’m sure, and desired to get your hands on the model so you too could prevent an ensuing Zombie onslaught.

Well, you’re in luck. Rob Rodriguez is putting on his monthly PhotoWorks rendering contest and this month’s model is none other than, yep, the Zombie-killin’ cart o’ death. You can download the SolidWorks model here.

Zombies?
Yes. Of course. It so obvious. You strap some cricket bats to that sucker and you’ll be knockin’ the heads of the undead while keeping your distance and your brain-cage intact.

PhotoWorks Tips
PhotoWorks is what I’m most unfamiliar with in SolidWorks, but also one of the things I’m most interested in. So, what tips would you give me to get started on the right foot? There’s the new PhotoWorks step-by-step Book from Rob and he’s got some tips on his site as well, but what do you do to start off your rendering? Do you have a process no one knows about? How do you get the lighting just the way you want?

Some have tried PhotoWorks, some use it all the time, so here’s your chance to download a cool model, enter the contest, share some tips with everyone and maybe together we can save the human race.

If you’re familiar with Rob’s talent, you know it will contain everything to get you from plain model to photo-realistic bliss in beautiful, easy to understand steps.

Keep an eye out for the book and in the mean time check out the table of contents and definitely subscribe to Rob’s blog! He’ll be going over and expanding on topics in the book. Here’s some items you’ll be able to create.
