SolidSmack Cornered: Questioned About Future of 3D CAD

14 Jul, 2008 by Josh Mings in NEWS

Lou Gallo of SolidWorks Heard (twitter) has apparently recorded a recent phone conversation between us and has put it up online so that all my glean my mildly incoherent ramblings.

I told my friend Alex Ruiz that my voice sounds like a conversation between Kermit the frog and miss piggy, but in actually, it sounds more like I’m tired and have a deviated septum. Of course, we’re all critics of ourselves and I’m one of the worst.

I wish Lou and I had more time to talk about the future of CAD stuff. I’m interested in how CAD is developing in context of web technology changing the way 3D applications are used. I’ll get into that later in some highly-interesting and somewhat speculative articles that will not be boring unless you just absolutely hate that kind of stuff.

In the meantime, listen to the podcast (Episode 161) and tell me what I need to do to improve my interviewing skills. So far, I’m at… 1) don’t walk while talking so you don’t sound like you’re out of breathe and 2) get some sleep the night before.

SolidSmack Goes Comment Crazy, Uses Disqus Commenting System

11 Jul, 2008 by Josh Mings in NEWS

You may start to see some changes around the trusty ol’ SolidSmack site. For one, I’ve integrated the Disqus commenting system into the site. Sound fancy? It is, and it’s got some cool features that will make commenting 100% more fun than before.

I’m using the Disqus commenting system for a few reasons, but mostly because I think you’ll get the most value out of it and make the conversations even more meaningful, and who doesn’t want a meaningful conversation, huh?

Features include:

  • threaded comments
  • email & mobile posting
  • track and subscribe to comments
  • comment ratings
  • comment flagging
  • export your comments
  • and video commenting

I’m using a the Disqus WordPress plugin that was super easy to install. I had everything configured and was up and running in about 5 minutes. You’ll see the comments on old post with no comments as well as new posts (like this one).

You have the option of creating a user profile or commenting unverified. If you do create a Disqus profile you get to show off a photo in your comment and join in on the social network features and really, just enjoy it all a whole lot more. Here’s my Disqus profile.

So go ahead and test it out by leaving a comment below. Let me know what you think and if any features need to be added. Thanks!

SolidSmack Turns 1 Year Old: Still Cute, But a Bit Sassy

09 May, 2008 by Josh Mings in NEWS

Well everyone, look at that. We have completely plundered the riches of the web and have a big ol’ bag of incredibly useful tips and information. SolidSmack.com is officially one year old today. (See first post here.)

You all are completely incredible and make this so much fun, I can’t even explain it. I seriously can not believe all the people (and characters) I’ve meet the past year. So spin in a circle, pat your back and yell SolidSmack real loud to celebrate the joy.

Shouts out to the other bloggers, SolidWorks, and especially to the ones that throw down in the comments.

What’s coming up this year?
More wonderful posts, but I want to hear from you. What do you want to see more of? less of? What do you like the most? least?

As many have speculated, a new version of SolidSmack is launching soon and I want to make it as useful for you as possible with content you find interesting. So let me know!

Stats for the past year
Wondering how solidsmack did?

Question: Why Do You Go To SolidWorks.com?

22 Apr, 2008 by Josh Mings in NEWS

what-can-solidworks-do.jpgIf you’ve taken a quick excursion to SolidWorks.com you’ll notice some new slick graphics (love the sliding effect), more quicklinks and a smooth modern gray replacing the lovely orange hue.

One of the content blocks down below the featured content has a question that asks “What can SolidWorks do for you?”

This got me thinking. What can they do? Why do you want go to SolidWorks.com? Is it to get to the forums or see videos? Your company (in most cases) buys the software, so why does it matter to you? Are there things that are missing you wish they had?

SolidWorks Corporate Move to Venice Could Mean JetSkis For All

01 Apr, 2008 by Josh Mings in NEWS

venice-jetski.jpgIt’s kind of an unprecedented move, but SolidWorks, the 3D corporation that has called Concord, Massachusetts home for the past 15 years, has finished the final paperwork to relocate most of it’s home office to Venice, Italy.

“[SolidWorks] felt it was time to be closer to lots of water and when some building became available in Venice, the timing couldn’t have been better… We feel the user-base will receive better support and have more options when planning a Mediterranean Cruise.” Yourk Razy, Swx PR

I’ve heard from some very reliable sources that this was done to shield the development team from outside influences as SolidWorks2009 draws neigh.

There also seems to be plans for a large purchase of Yamaha Jetskis and an early registration being filled for the North Eastern Italia Jetski Invitational on July 21st.

For discounted tickets and airfare you can send an email to 412008@solidworks.com
