There’s no doubt. Computing is changing. But, most of us still sit at our desks punchin’ keys with one hand while staying caffeinated with the other. So, what would happen if you could keep the caffeine and ditch the desk?
The thing is, a lot of us need that workstation wallop to crank huge amounts of 3D data, analysis and renderings. I imagine that’s changing as well and we will start to see more options which, at the very least, make that box warming your feet, quite obsolete. For us users though, we would have to see the value in switching.
So, if an existing CAD company (or a new one) created lightweight faster apps that allow you to extend the use of your data via laptop, netbook, or mobile, would you switch?

If you felt a rumble in the aether that ended up with a guy suddenly appearing in your face poking your eyeballs with a tablet computer, you’re probably not dreaming and you’re probably not holding back a good solid punch to his gut.
Neither is Timothy Barnard of Fresh Design Base, a Manchester, UK web design firm and creator of SitePAD. He created SitePAD (Pocket Aided Design) to “extend your office capabilities onsite” via your mobile device and provide a way to share the data through an online interface with your team members.
It’s not only the first CAD app on the iPhone and iPad, but is taking direct aim at developing a 3D version and defining what subscription-based CAD apps and touchscreen functionality will be like. We discussed the product with Tim and got the low-down on why he created it and how it helps in design.
You may enjoy running at a tree full speed with your mouth wide open, but when it comes to really embedding a detailed assembly tree structure into your forehead… or your project, you may actually find SolidWorks Treehouse to be a little less painful.
Nearly a year ago, we looked at 5 Ways to Use Treehouse to Speed Your Design. We were naive, full of wet noodles and thought it was just a neat little tool to set up assemblies. Turns out it was actually an CAD-app symbiote festering as a larvae waiting to take on full-scale assembly management.
Oh yes, shake your head. But there’s something going on here. Treehouse V2 is available for download and it got a lot more functionality. Let’s take a look at what’s new and then run through the wooded lot of sharpened speculation.

Technology is changing and growing faster than your mangy hair. And like the hair, it’s time to think about a little trim and a wee bit o’ style.
Not so long ago, many ‘CAD technicians’ used a tablet menu to pick and click their way to 2-dimensional, layer switchin’ bliss. We’ve seen a transition, moving away from menu tablets to on-screen menus, on through marking menus and mouse gestures, and then back picking commands via touch-screen. Product development is heading for a change as are the devices we use. So, in the future…
Today, the T-mobile G1 phone running the highly anticipated Google Android OS, that everyone is scraping the brick off of buildings to see, is being revealed. On top of that it’s cutting into position for iPhone/Blackberry replacement and plans to take over a large segment of smartphone users by the end of the year.
THe T-mobile G1 is a communications device. The Android Operating system is a free and open mobile platform. That means development, but will will communications and CAD ever collide?
