From Engineering to Art. The Amazing Sketchbook of Shaun Mullen

14 Dec, 2010 by in DESIGN

You’re sitting in a design review meeting. In a conference room. The dull buzz of the fluorescent lights match the mono-tone static of some voice in the room, but who cares, you’ve got a pen. Before you know it, you’ve inked an entire mural across the wall, the whiteboard and your boss’ face. He would be upset, but he’s quite amused that you were able to hold him him down long enough to draw a small robot holding a laser gun in the crevice of his cheek. Inspiration can hit us at any time.

It hits all the time for one engineer who turns color into some of the coolest environments you’ll ever see. Introducing Shaun Mullen. He’s an engineer, but he’s also an artist and quite an amazing one at that. From Cumbria UK, Shaun brings forth the beauty in illustrations he creates with finger and stylus using Sketchbook Pro for the iPad. Yes, all of the artwork you’re about to see was done on an iPad. I had the opportunity to talk with Shaun and learned more about his background in engineering and what inspires him.

Design Juice To Boost: A Little Bit’o Tuesday Inspiration – Franco Ceccotti

Oh man are we about to blow the door of your creative gourde WIDE OPEN. You might just call a meeting to discuss new ways to design those pump housings you model all day. Be warned.

I’ve been wanting to find some simple design to showcase. Simple design that can inspire designers and engineers alike to the possibilities of what they could produce within a 3D modeling program… and even more easily with a program like SolidWorks.

So, what better way that too look at some products from a acclaimed Italian bathroom furniture designer, FRANCOCECCOTTI. It’s simple, kinda elegant, but has some really pronounced profiles that you, if familiar with few 3D CAD commands, can translate into your own ideas. Have a look. Is this type of design inspiring?

Using SolidWorks To Help People When You’re Bored

What would you do if you were off in Ethiopia waiting in a guest house to adopt your third child?

If I thought long and hard I probably wouldn’t have come up with what Caleb Stolls did. I don’t want to tell his whole story but basically he created an model and animation of the guest house to help people planning trips to the location. You get the layout of the rooms with photos… and he even added a groovy world rhythm to boot.

Here’s the video, but check out his post and let him know what you think.
