Do You Design This Mens Wedding Ring to Be Awesome?
I Do.

03 Aug, 2011 by Josh Mings in CAD, CONTESTS

There are five reasons I just dropped what was doing to check this out *looks down at fist, punches face*. Fortunately, I didn’t have machined titanium rings on each finger or my face would be a bloody, unrecognizable mess. What’s exciting me to punches is a self-initiated competition going on over at GrabCAD. Put on by user Scott Bruins to design the ultimate Titanium Mens Wedding Ring. Scott is getting hitched next year and since he works in a machine shop, where he’s designed some other (quite fancy) Titanium Rings, he thought he’d offer up a challenge to the GrabCAD community for one of his very own. The challenge is on. Some designs have been submitted and engineers and designers of all sorts are getting excited about wedding rings.

Design the Coolest Fender,
Win a GoPro Hero HD Camera

25 Jul, 2011 by Josh Mings in CONTESTS

A lot of people tell me there are “better things” to do with compact electric scooter fenders than strap them to my body and run through a crowd of cake-vomiting children at a birthday party wall of fire and punches. One of those activities which is said to be better, is tossing the existing fenders in a scrap heap and designing some completely new fenders; Fenders that scream supreme scooter style. You can do just that with the latest CrowdCAD project at GrabCAD.com. The best fender wins a GoPro HD Camera, but you don’t have much time left!

Free Bugatti Veyron Model? Yes, please.

06 Jul, 2011 by Josh Mings in RESOURCES

Some people call it a car. I call it pure awesomeness wrapped in a shell of pure awesomeness. It’s a Bugatti Veyron. And since it’s the most expensive car of modern history, it may be slightly challenging to even gaze upon it’s sleek frontal area or run your fingers along it’s hydraulic-powered rear spoiler. Chin up. A free Bugatti Veyron model is within your reach. Even better, there’s a SolidWorks surfacing tutorial that goes along with it. Punch it.

GrabCAD Hits 100,000 Downloads. What’s the Most Popular? [Infographic]

20 Apr, 2011 by Josh Mings in NEWS

I’ll give you two guesses. If people upload 3D models to a library where other people can view and download the models, what’s going to happen? A mauling by rabid dogs is NOT the right answer… but it’s close. Apparently if there are free models, people will attack them like carnivorous beasts to download and have their way with them. Was there any doubt?

GrabCAD, the engineering community startup which promotes such practices, has crossed the threshold of 100,000 downloads. The free CAD model library is growing community of users who love sharing their models and seizing others. Along with this milestone is some interesting data the GrabCAD crew has accumulated about the community. What is the most popular CAD Software used? What are the popular models? What categories are people interested in? All this and more awaits you…
