How Autodesk Plans to Consolidate CAD (and You)
on the Cloud.

29 Sep, 2011 by in CAD, NEWS

Autodesk has it out for you. Your software too. And probably your choice of breakfast cereals. Evil. This week they dropped their plans for the future of CAD computing revealing very clearly what software will be delivered over the web and what software service will be accessed through a browser. They’ve slated it as ‘Access to Design Capability from Anywhere, at Anytime’. You, Your design capability. Anywhere. While I think that’s the wrong focus, there’s actually another aspect to the future of CAD that’s being completely overshadowed by all the movin’ and groovin’ into the Cloud, but first let’s look at what the next Cloud poundin’ development phase for Autodesk could be.

3 Top Techs Pushing the Touchless, Eye-tracking Future of CAD

02 Mar, 2011 by in TECH

Quickly now. Stick your hands against the screen. Now, lift them off slightly and move your head to either side. Did you see that? A physical 3-dimensional object rising from the aether around your digits? No, no you didn’t, because it hasn’t happened yet… but it could.

Three technologies have surfaced showing how we may be able to interact, build, create and manipulate geometry in the future, the near future. Bring all three together and you get something even more spectacular.

Get Your Fresh, Hot ‘Death of SolidWorks’ Wallpaper Right Here.

10 Jan, 2011 by in NEWS, ROCKIN'

We’re just not going to let that “Kill SolidWorks” thing die… ahem. One comment from former SolidWorks CEO, Jeff Ray is all it takes for a firestorm to start whipping our sanity. What most people do not realize is that the is about creating a better product and providing some more options, not about violently poking a product with the sharp end of C++ stick while watching it bleed out.

Times are changing, and Develop3D has published a pivotal piece of industry insight that settles exactly that. It’s titled, The Death of SolidWorks? Yes, a question. A question that brings up other questions, but an article that puts a lot of the hype to rest, nails down the context and reveals what we should really be thinking about – the death of something much, MUCH bigger…

Now, that’s all well and good, but way too deep and serious for the likes of us. What we need are wallpapers. Dang big ones to put on our dang big screens that will make passer-by say, “DaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAANG!” Here they are.

30 Nov, 2010 by in NEWS

Autodesk University 2010 is off to a design romping start and there’s already been a massive skull buttering of product announcements, tech previews and tid-bits of information coming in from all directions.

Autodesk has no qualms about mentioning hybrid modeling approaches, cloud computing or delivering software over the web. Mostly because, well, they’re already doing it. They’ve left plenty of lingering questions (delivery, price, security) but here’s the meat of what Autodesk is introducing to you, the future of design.

Ask the Reader: Will Project Lightning Live Up to All the Hype?

27 Oct, 2010 by in NEWS

Update: Just an update… I’ve got the overview with my thoughts up on what project lightning turned into… PTC Launches Creo

Whatcha think now?

There’s a peculiar odor of CADmospheric ions in the air and all the blustery bits of activity are swelling up over the US East Coast. Tomorrow, October 28th, PTC will reveal their plans to “define the course of CAD for the next 20 years.” They’re calling it “Project Lightning” and since revealing their plans for the future of design at the PTC/User conference last June, some people are kinda wondering what it’s all about.

We’ll be at PTC headquarter for the reveal, dishing out any of the good stuff, but will it live up to the future-defining hype? If you know what Project Lightning is, what do you think? If you’re not familiar with the idea behind Project Lightning, hit the jump to learn a little more.

Using Multi-touch in SpaceClaim. The Future of Direct Modeling and 3D Design.

30 Mar, 2010 by in TECH

While I was growing up, I’d occasionally run towards a wall, jam my fingers up into my arms, pass out and wake up to dogs dragging me off into the woods. Fortunately, the dogs were my pets and my fingers healed into agile implements of multi-touch destruction.

And thankfully so. At SolidWorks World 2010 I sat down with Blake Courter to try the new multi-touch features released with SpaceClaim 2009+ late last year. He snickered at my deformed knuckles, but observed in awe my reaction to what I’m positive will be tech that shapes the future of 3D modeling.

Here’s why.

Stylus Jabbing Fun Using SolidWorks on a Wacom Cintiq Tablet

18 Jan, 2010 by in TECH

So, I’m sitting here throwing make-shift tablet styluseseseses at my face waiting for a massive Cintiq 21″ tablet to arrive so I can test it out, when I see Jordan Tadic from 3D Vision showing off how he used SolidWorks on a Wacom Cintiq.

It’s tablet pickin’ fun of the highest caliber… or next to highest caliber. Check out the video overdubbed with Mystic Bounce by DJ Madlib… some right proper tunage for such sketchin’ and groovin’. After you see it, what do you think? Would you want to use one?

Head to Screen Slam Jam. 3D Head Tracking and Inventor on a Mac?

12 Jan, 2010 by in TECH

What if you could stick suction cups on your oculars and move models around on the screen with your eyeballs? Yeah, and, what if you could stick suction cups on your chest, hands, neck and elbows to do the same thing? Oh yeah. Well, what if… you didn’t need suction cups… BOO.YAH.

We’ve talked about Microsoft’s Project Natal making your 3D CAD hands dance, but what about Apple? Houston Neal from Manufacturing Software Advice has some ideas and shows one way your massive brain cage could harness 3D.

10 New Technology Predictions for the Future of 3D and Design

06 Jan, 2010 by in TECH

Quick, while nobody’s looking, slip those goggles on that make you look as if you’ve slipped through time to warn yourself about reading this post. “DON’T READ IT!” your future self says, but curiosity grasped your eyelids and pulls them clear over your freshly shaved hairline.

You just can’t start a new decade without throwing a huge, sopping wet wad of presumption at the next one. It would be easy to make predictions about tech in 2010, but after popping out the orifice of one decade, there’s just nothing like rollin’ up your sleeves and heading toward the end of the next one. That’s what we aim to do and we’ve got 10 predictions to make you wonder how it is all going to end.
