You just know when you see massive chunks of metal and wires attached to a scrap piece of plywood, there’s got to be a story behind it… either that, or you’ve taken a wrong turn down a hillbilly back road where you’ll quickly discover everything is attached to a scrap piece of plywood.

You may have prototyped a design or two of your own, built an engine out of dried mustard and carpet, or learned multiple ways to electrocute yourself while micro-controllers and midi devices melt across your lap. Yet, it’s amazing to think that many a famous product started with a few raw materials, some scrap parts and a few accidental circumstances. Wired has featured six original designs delegated to museum display status, but designs that nonetheless bleed ingenuity. Here’s a little taste.

It’s Not a Tumor. It’s a Giant Mass of Infinite USB… Best Idea Ever

You know when you get on the bus or, even better, when you’re walking through the mall and people are looking at you like a mass of USB cords just exploded out of your jawbone? It’s because it has and it’s scaring the children.

Not to worry! You can tame those wily cords with Gonglue Jiang’s and his Infinite USB design. While it won’t keep you from looking like a hideous creature stuffed full of way too many devices which require USB connectivity, it will make you look a bit more tidy.

Multi-Touch for Product Configuration. BMW Revs it Up.

Finally, I mean FINALLY were seeing some development come out with those fancy Microsoft Surface multi-touch displays and BMW is the company making it cool to have multiple appendages.

The ‘BMW Product Navigator’ allows those in the mood for a BMW to select options, colors, see video of their configurations and save it to USB to take home and show the kids after their racquetball lessons. Time for a test drive.
