3D Human CAD Models

Well, blow my everloving mind out of the water. You won’t see the PR till Tuesday, but the New York Times just scooped the whole CAD industry on the news.

AutoCAD for Apple Mac is here. Not only that, the scaled down version, AutoCAD WS, is here for the iPhone and the iPad. We’ve not got the brief, video or screenshots of what it looks like yet, but needless to say, this has been a longtime CAD on the Mac fiend desire. The OS X version releases October for $3,995. Free mobile versions for iPhone, iPad and iPod to follow.

Autodesk Effects CAD on Web Future with Project ‘Butterfly’

19 Jan, 2010 by Josh Mings in NEWS

I almost feel dirty just talking about 2D. Dirty, dirty, dirty. However, there’s another dimension to this multi-colored mix of Autodesk aggregation. It’s online. As in completely web-based, but it goes beyond that, which is where it gets really interesting.

The interwebular AutoCAD environment is wrapped in a social sauce giving you abilities to share, review and co-edit your .dwg’s with all of your 2-dimensional friends. It’s Autodesk’s Project Butterfly and it’s a step toward 3D on the web, in which Autodesk also has a Twitch for.

Here are some details on Butterfly and what it’s got going for it.

CAD on the Web: Toss AutoCAD, Edit DWG’s Online

20 May, 2008 by Josh Mings in RESOURCES

edit autocad drawings onlineSlap me sideways and constrain me to X/Y coordinates. SolidWorks Labs has released a new web app, called BluePrint Now, that allows you to create/edit/save DWG files online. That… is just wild people. Whatcha think the AutoDesk folks think about this. hmmm?

Honestly, when I first tried to use it, I felt like we have a loooong way till we get to 3D CAD online. It’s a step in the right direction though – different tech I imagine. So, before you uninstall AutoCAD and swarm toward the Lab, here are some things you’ll want to know.

SolidWorks vs. AutoCAD: The Twitter Spectrum

16 May, 2008 by Josh Mings in ROCKIN'

solidworks vs autocad twitter spectrumMaybe it’s not fair, but I thought it would be a little fun to compare the conversation of SolidWorks vs. AutoCAD happening on Twitter.

I used an amazing tool that data visualization ar-teest, Jeff Clark, has come up with called Twitter Spectrum. It’s a visualization of the words used in two topics you enter into the search.

He also has NewsSpectrum, that analyzes Google News, which can give you another look at what words the press is using to describe two topics. Verdict: People use ‘a bad word‘ to describe AutoCAD more… but look, you can see ‘crashed’ more on the SolidWorks side and there’s SolidSmack right in the middle! oooo! I’m treading in the gray area between 2D and 3D! Say it ain’t so! :)
