Tinkercad. Incredibly Brilliant, Web-based 3D Modeling for Makers

19 Apr, 2011 by Josh Mings in TECH
3D Human CAD Models

Ok, now this is more like it. I’ll try to tell you without choking on the beauty of this, but since my larynx is already convulsing, you may have to proceed on your own. I know, you’ve probably had your fill of web-based 3D modeling applications. What’s that? There aren’t any? You mean, they’re weren’t any… until now.

Tinkercad, a Finland-based startup, has just lunched their public beta after a 6 month development cycle. It brings the simplicity of 3D modeling to the simplicity of the web and, really, it couldn’t be more beautifully done. If you haven’t jumped away already, here’s a look at what you’ll see.

SolidSmack Promo Week: Vuuch For Discussing Things About Design.

22 Mar, 2010 by Josh Mings in NEWS

vuuch-sceneWell, would you look at that. You’ve put on the ‘nice shirt’ to start the week off and nobody has said a thing. Well, TEAR. IT. OFF. and as you do, scream VUUCH! at the top of your lungs.

Sure it will get attention, but even more important, it will shred the vocal cords and remind you that this Thursday, they are having a very rare web preview to show you what Vuuch is and what it actually does for you. So, if you’re having trouble pronouncing words with two ‘U‘s in them or curious about what Vuuch does, here are the details.

5 Reasons Why Werewolves Will Take Over 3D Product Design

18 Feb, 2010 by Josh Mings in DESIGN

Seriously, no bullets are gonna help, no alliance with the undead or any sort of blunt object or girly scream. The end… is near…. and where ever you run, the werewolf hordes are approaching.

Fortunately, you’ve already been bitten and eventually you’ll feel a a sharp bone shifting jab as technological morphotypes wrap their corpuscular DNA around your innate engineering ability and suave design sense, whereby transforming you into a new breed of something to be FEARED. Really, I wouldn’t lie to you.

So, I’ve gathered what’s making it happen and 5 reasons why. Time to feast.

Wait to Vomit 3D CAD or Move to Windows 7 and SolidWorks 2010? Win a SpacePilot PRO

23 Dec, 2009 by Josh Mings in TECH

If you get the fever and shakes just thinking about moving to new technology, I’m with you. (I’m totally not with you) I’d much prefer to just stick my finger in my throat and vomit magnificent cad data all over a glass office table.

Can you imagine?… you SO know that would be awesome. People would sit… and wait… to watch you wretch. But until they come up with the technology that allows vomiting CAD to happen, we’re stuck with upgrading hardware and software till we’re numb in the face.

So, right now, I’m chugin’ Ovaltine and bangin’ away on Windows 98 and SolidWorks 97 plus. STOP LAUGHING! it hurts… (I’m totally not using those, but…) I need you to make fun of me and tell me why I need to put my fear of change muscular IT people with laser guns, behind me and upgrade to the latest tech.

You know what you could get? Well, besides, virtual high fives for your wit from everyone, you’ll have the chance to win a SpacePilot Pro. It’s a fancy 3D mouse thingy that’s part of the scary, new present of technology. All ya gotta do to enter is leave a comment making fun of me and giving us all good reasons to upgrade to Windows 7 and SolidWorks 2010… or not. If you want a few extra chances then do the following…

Ask the Reader: If You Could Design Anything With 3D What Would It Be? {Poll}

02 Sep, 2009 by Josh Mings in NEWS

OK, so the last poll revealed that no one cares if the OS goes away as long as our lovely apps work. Hoorah. But who cares about OS this or OS that when you can model up something sweet you’ve always wanted to, right?

There’s the 3D modeling at your day job, but what if you had your choice? I somehow doubt most would honestly choose gasket molds. Not that gasket molds don’t ‘pay the bills,’ but what would be the ideal? I’d be throwing down some models of spacecraft, robots and toys myself. What would you model?

Face-Tracking 3D Space With Your Webcam. Potential For 3D CAD?

21 Apr, 2009 by Josh Mings in TECH

Welcome. It’s knee-slappin’, face-movin’ time again here on SolidSmack and this week we introduce to you Mr. Doob, who thought it a pleasant idea, in his Flash experimentation, to show you what it’s like to have a 3D scene position itself based on the position of you melon.

You can play with the mouse-driven version, but to really experience it, and you have to experience it, you can get in the Face tracking + 3D Scene action here if you have a webcam.

The Extremely Huge (and Slightly Imaginative) Augmented Expectations of Future 3D CAD Users

18 Mar, 2009 by Josh Mings in CAD

Set the sticks and mud aside. Playing with objects in our physical world is nothing against the impending sensorific-digitized-virtual-realitastic onslaught of completely augmented playtime for you and the kiddos.

You may be seeing Frantz Lasorne very cool concept for a ‘blaster bot’ style kids game floating around. It uses nothing but the pure goodness of Augmented Reality and overactive imaginations juiced by years of uber-gaming and bags of twizzlers.

The future of CAD and PLM is bound to undergo some changes due to the expectations of kids playing games currently available and games like these that are setting up new ways of how people (future CAD users) interact with their environment. You’d expect there would be some expectations, right?

Here they are, but be careful… expectations are not what you may… expect.

First, check out the video.

3 Dudes Gone 3D. Pure SolidWorks Hilarity

10 Mar, 2009 by Josh Mings in ROCKIN'

3dudes-gone3dWhat exactly do you get when you stick two highly talented SolidWorks users, a middle-age product manager and thick sarcasm into a small trailer?

Only the most jaw-tightening 3D CAD video series hilarity to ever be broadcast across the vast reaches of limited wi-fi access. These videos wreak of everything your design universe is composed of. I don’t want to build it up too much, but if you don’t watch it, you life will be exactly 9 minutes less special. It’s true.

The Lenovo Dual Screen Laptop. How Would You Use It?

23 Dec, 2008 by Josh Mings in TECH

dual-screen-laptopI’m telling ya, you wake up one morning and screens are just sliding out all over the place. Soon they’ll be yelling, ‘touch me!’, ‘no, touch me!’ – but for now look what Lenovo is sliding out to the masses January 5th at CES.

The Lenovo W700ds. A laptop with a slide-out secondary screen. Magnificent, don’t ya think? Kinda malignant tumor looking, but with the specs this thing has, you could run a little 3D modeling, a little video editing and more. Check it out.

How Will Flexible Screen Technology Affect 3D CAD and PLM?

10 Dec, 2008 by Josh Mings in TECH

Prepare to wrap yourself in some warm flexible display technology on a cold wintry night. The news is getting more common and the screens themselves are getting larger.

Gamers and advertising is getting all excited about being able to wrap ‘experience’ in every corner of a room or building, but how it could effect 3D CAD and PLM could go beyond ‘the experience’ of creating product design to creating a more collaborative environment.

What are the applications? Are there any?
