What 3D CAD Could Learn from… Kill me slowly… Microsoft Excel.

01 Mar, 2010 by in ROCKIN'

It almost hurts me to say this, but the cool factor is just too much to bare… Microsoft Excel rocks at sketching cell-shaded line art.

If you know me, you know I abhor spreadsheets list creation management hell. However, I’ll get past the fancy formatting and formula options used to drain the liquid centers from our souls for a few moments, to gaze upon the magic that is the the pixel art of Felipe, aka Shukei. He uses the freeform tool in Excel the create some of the most complicated line art you can imagine.

There’s a feature that makes Excel perfect for doing this, a feature a few CAD systems, both 2D and 3D could learn from. First check out Felipe’s process. 13 hours, speed up into a mere 5 minutes. Amazing.

Ask the Reader: What Process/Programs Do You Use in Design? Examples?

17 Jun, 2009 by in DESIGN

You are lookin’ sporty. Really, you are stylin’ the design and engineering process like no other and everyone wants to know just how you do it… or at least, we do.

Is it possible that you use more than one process or program to design and engineer products? We may not even realized it if 90% of our day is spent in one program. But, as is the case with many, there’s an insanely complex series of events that put every bit of design into play. What are yours?

Usable 3D Geometry Please. Could There Ever Be a SolidWorks ‘Catalyst’?

01 Jun, 2009 by in TECH

Raise your eyebrow in a menacing way if you’ve ever received a really crumby .pdf, concept print or model data to create a production model from? If only there was a little more info or a way that the data could be transformed into usable 3D parametric data huh?

Adobe has just release a interesting program from their Labs called Flash Catalyst (formerly codename ‘Thermo’). It allows graphics designers to create user interfaces… without coding, transforming the graphics into working examples that developers can then use to complete a website or app.

10 Key Components for Success Using SolidWorks: REVAMPED

24 Feb, 2009 by in CAD

swx-success-revampedAfter really thinking about this post, getting some feedback and losing a slap fight with an angry camel trader, I’ve decided to totally revamp the former SolidWorks Success post and put them in all together.

It lacks the detail I originally determined I wanted to put into the points, but the angst about not having the list all together was more than I and some others could bear. Fear not, it’s all here, in one short post, ready to be devoured.
