10 of the Best Tech-for-CAD Goodies of CES 2010 (and More Highlights)

12 Jan, 2010 by Josh Mings in TECH
3D Human CAD Models

CES 2010 just blew the doors off sales tax revenue out in Las Vegas this past week and at the same time blew our minds with some juicy new tech headed our way. Tech that could very easily find it’s application, or even it’s perfect fit in 3D product design and development.

While there was plenty of talk about the dawning of our next decade being viewed through 3D HDTV’s and upon wee tablet devices, we’ve picked the ones that stand out. Ones that not only make you flare your drool-drenched teeth shanks, but also the ones we’d love to strap to ourselves in our own office. Here are the top 10 we cant wait to get our hands on. Which is your favorite?

The Five Best 3D CAD-Related Tech Innovations of the Last Decade.

29 Dec, 2009 by Josh Mings in TECH

2010. It’s here… or almost here. Which means it’s time to reflect on all the fun innovations that we ran screaming towards, or away from, over the past decade.

Over the past ten years I went from storing data on a CD to storing data online. I also went from emailing someone a couple times a week to sending tens, thousands, billions of messages per day. All the tech to keep me distracted from breathing normally or having a properly developed physique is a mix of good and bad, but mostly good.

As far as the CAD-related tech is concerned, there’s only five I could think of, which means there are likely twenty others which are way better. Here’s what spilled out after a small glass tube resembling my head was shaken vigorously and smashed against a neck of a CAD administrator.

Google Chrome OS to Pound the Suck Out of Start-up & Webify Your Apps

09 Jul, 2009 by Josh Mings in TECH

For the somber souls chained to 5 minute boot times and 100% CPU usage, take heart. Early yesterday morning, Google announcment Chrome OS.

Yes, another OS, but this time one with all the characteristics you would expect from a product put out by Google, namely, speed, simplicity and yeah, totally open-source. An open-source OS. That big news for any type of app developer, but this has one more aspect that completely changes how we’ll play each day.

Usable 3D Geometry Please. Could There Ever Be a SolidWorks ‘Catalyst’?

01 Jun, 2009 by Josh Mings in TECH

Raise your eyebrow in a menacing way if you’ve ever received a really crumby .pdf, concept print or model data to create a production model from? If only there was a little more info or a way that the data could be transformed into usable 3D parametric data huh?

Adobe has just release a interesting program from their Labs called Flash Catalyst (formerly codename ‘Thermo’). It allows graphics designers to create user interfaces… without coding, transforming the graphics into working examples that developers can then use to complete a website or app.

3D Interfaces. You Bladder Button is in My Electrostatic Sensor Array {Video}

29 Apr, 2009 by Josh Mings in TECH

Ah, the wild world of 3D Interfaces technology. It’s bad enough you’re being forced down the multi-touch path, huh? Well, for those that enjoy the bliss of moving graphical elements around the screen with your hand, the research and experimentation continue.

There’s two sides of the UI tide – restricting you fingers to the screen and the less practical movement within a large 3D space. Does it have to be one or the other? Both? Neither?

Here’s two projects being with some sweet video to make you start exercising those finger musculars

Developing 3D Content Online. Are You Feeling the Itch?

27 Feb, 2009 by Josh Mings in TECH

wildpockets-brakeSo how many of you tore yourself out of a paper bag this morning ready to play with 3D online? hmm, nobody? Well, some of you may have a bit of an mild obsession itch about getting away from program installations and tedious upgrades to create and manage 3D online.

Wild Pockets is on the field with a OpenGL web app claiming “create whatever 3D you can imagine.” It would certainly see that way. They’re bringing 3D online, but they’re also not the only one’s after that market.

Check it out.

Adaptive 3D Sketching System of the Future: AutoDesk Gets it ON… On a Mac

03 Dec, 2008 by Josh Mings in TECH

I’ve just picked my monitor up off the floor and guess what I see underneath? The warm glow of a video showing some extremely cool sketch technology coming out of AutoDesk University this week.

You remember I (Heart) Sketch? The 3D sketch system that brings conceptualization back to a native hand-drawn environment. Amazing isn’t it? Well, AutoDesk has gone one step further. Video after the jump.

Windows7 and More. How Will You Use 3D CAD in 2010?

29 Oct, 2008 by Josh Mings in TECH

how will multitouch in windows 7 be used with solidworksThe news about Windows7, Microsoft next OS, has been pouring out of the seething cauldron of Microsoft PDC this week, getting all the fanboys and multi-touch crazies in a ruckus.

Are you all just extremely AMPPED? No? Well, for those gnashing their teeth over Vista, the new OS promises to be the escape Microsoft wants to provide it’s ever so constrained loyal user base, and they plan to provide it even before 2010 gets here.

However, this raises some interesting questions for 3D CAD users. Multi-touch navigation across the screen? How will display technology develop? What engineering design companies are aware of these technology changes? Enjoy a very choppy preview video, my thoughts and your opinions after the break.
