3D Augmented City. Digital Info Will Surround and Absorb You.

22 Dec, 2010 by Josh Mings in TECH
3D Human CAD Models

I think you’d agree. There’s just not enough visual clutter surrounding us as we go about our daily lives. It would be so much better if we were surrounded by an orb of interface efficiency.

Fortunately, there are people thinking the very same thing, but not only thinking it… creating it and putting together 3D videos to show just what it would be like. Keiichi Matsuda is augmenting his reality to show you how yours may be augmented in the future. Put your anaglyph glasses on.

Flex Your Models! How To Create a Simple Propeller in SolidWorks

20 Dec, 2010 by Josh Mings in NEWS

Sometimes when you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you can throw mashed potatoes through a propeller blade. Or, you can throw propellers through a wall of mashed potatoes. Other times, you can sit down for a few minutes and model up a propeller in SolidWorks while eating mashed potatoes.

Azim Hamid did just that, although, in his case, I don’t believe overcooked starches were any part of the process. Nonetheless, he’s put together a video that takes you through the steps of creating some bladed bliss using a very unique feature in SolidWorks – one you may not be too familiar with.

Friday Smackdown: Knot Rigger

17 Dec, 2010 by Josh Mings in SMACKDOWN

The gaff-rigged dory rocked calmly in the quiet waters, but the sound that came from the deep wasn’t familiar. Neither were the tentacles coming over the side. They were after one thing… a cod sandwich, wrapped in lettuce and smelling strongly of these links.

Erik Desmazières – His surreal, geometric style print work is not only amazing, it’s flamazing… like flames of amazing.
Google Body Browser – Browse the human body like Google Earth. You’ll need a super modern browser with WebGL support to experience.
World Lens – Speaking of browsing brilliance, why not have words you view through a camera-phone automatically translated. Welcome the future.
Google Docs Animation – I’m sick of Google with their body browsing, but I don’t mind people who do cool stuff with their Docs program.
Free WordPress Theme for Portfolios and Journals – It’s slick, clean, widget-ready and works with WordPress 3.0+.
Mas Guapo – Spicy… and it comes with a free ‘stache.
Olly Moss Star Wars – New reimagining from illustrative master Moss.

Bonus! Sweet Tools!
PDF Unlock – Remove PDF restrictions.
SVG Edit – edit those SVG files.

First Crack at the Skull of the HP EliteBook 8740w Mobile Workstation

17 Dec, 2010 by Josh Mings in REVIEWS

I’ve got a bat. Actually, I have 10 little bats and they’re shaped suspiciously like fingers. Don’t worry, they’re mine and they’re ready to gouge the eye of technology… repeatedly, with lots of details, photos, unnecessary screaming and a skull that looks oddly like meat.

Yes, it’s time to take a look at the HP EliteBook 8740w you saw the bear unboxing and contest announcement of last week. It’s the most feature-rich computer I’ve used, and there are some interesting things I think you’ll like to know.

The Grit, the Gun, and the 4 Stages of Product Design Retribution

15 Dec, 2010 by Josh Mings in DESIGN

Click-click-click-click. You feel the cold steel against the back of your head. You’ll never forget that sound again… you know, if you survive. Back in the days of frontier life, hard winter nights and cattle drives the very distinct sound of a certain gun loading a bullet into the chamber encapsulated all the risks, restraint and recompense of the entire era.

Strange enough, the same can be applied directly to the head… the process, of product design. The interesting part of this is how you can see the progression of product design in a bullet being chambered. I’ll explain, but to start, it’s all set in motion by a modern day movie trailer, using product design from the 1800′s to reinforce the finality of a decision.

PTC Creo Questions Answered. Spoon It Carefully into Your Earholes

14 Dec, 2010 by Josh Mings in NEWS

So, PTC has launched Creo elements with full-blown Creo 1.0 to come out Summer 2011. It’s replacing Pro/E and the smorgasboard of other programs you’ve mastered over the years, so obviously there are bound to be a few questions.

Now, I typically don’t put spoons anywhere near my ears… or open fans. That’s just dangerous. But if you insist on learning more about PTC’s massaging, messaging, recipe for busting up CAD paradig-em’s, spoon it in slow my friend, spoon. it. slow.

From Engineering to Art. The Amazing Sketchbook of Shaun Mullen

14 Dec, 2010 by Josh Mings in DESIGN

You’re sitting in a design review meeting. In a conference room. The dull buzz of the fluorescent lights match the mono-tone static of some voice in the room, but who cares, you’ve got a pen. Before you know it, you’ve inked an entire mural across the wall, the whiteboard and your boss’ face. He would be upset, but he’s quite amused that you were able to hold him him down long enough to draw a small robot holding a laser gun in the crevice of his cheek. Inspiration can hit us at any time.

It hits all the time for one engineer who turns color into some of the coolest environments you’ll ever see. Introducing Shaun Mullen. He’s an engineer, but he’s also an artist and quite an amazing one at that. From Cumbria UK, Shaun brings forth the beauty in illustrations he creates with finger and stylus using Sketchbook Pro for the iPad. Yes, all of the artwork you’re about to see was done on an iPad. I had the opportunity to talk with Shaun and learned more about his background in engineering and what inspires him.
